Activity for inclusion and acceptance

OBJECTIVE: This activity is fun and interactive, aiming to get to know people in a new group, the objective is to find out what each has in common with the others. For a very short time, participants have the opportunity to interact with each other and learn one of the universal truths of groups—that they are not alone!

STRUCTURE: In the first five-seven minutes (depends on the number of participants and the number of questions), we ask the members to circle or fill-in the answer to any of the items (we can shorten the list or have them choose a maximum x number). Then they have to look for other members who have the same answers and write their initials next to the common items.

TRANSFORMATION: This activity creates personal connections between members, establishing asense of universality and friendship in the group. Participants have the opportunity to learn more information about each other in a very short time.

Activity “step forward” Equal human rights

OBJECTIVE:

The activity aims to make youngsters “get in other people’sshoes”, to understand better how others feel. For a short time, participantsdive into the life of people with different backgrounds and challenges theyface.

STRUCTURE: Each participant receive a small piece of paper with a briefdescription of the character they have to be. Then they have to close theireyes and try to “dive” into the life of the character, imagining how theirmornings and evening look like. Where do they live, work, spend the freedays. Then, participants are put to stand in a line and the trainer readsstatements concerning daily routine and a few human rights. The participantswho can freely do things from a statements, make a step forward after eachstatement, and those who can’t - they stand at the same place. After thestatements are over, we can see the participants at different lines, meaningthey don’t really have equal human rights. Each participant reveal their role tothe others and do a discussion about how they felt being in their roles.

DEBRIEFING: How did the participants feel being in their roles? What did the participants learn about lives of other people with different lifestyles and opportunities? How would participants apply the new knowledge in real life?

(Sometimes people self-discriminate themselves in order to get help and be included).

Topic: Alcohol and drug abuse

Number of participants–20, 5 from a country.

Countries involved–Lithuania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Latvia. We chose this countries because they are notorious for abusing drugs and alcohol.

The host country will be Bulgaria, because i tis the cheaper to organize a course there and the great weather makes it easier for outdoor activities.

Activity one

We write tought-provoking questions connected with the topic of the project. We pair the participants in couples and let them draw one question each. The couple disscuses the question between each other. After five minutes the groups change and they draw another question. The activity continues for 95 minutes

Examples of questions:

What are some things you enjoy doing when you're not using drugs or alcohol?

2.What are some goals you have for yourself in the next year?

3.Who is someone you look up to and why?

4.What are some challenges you've faced in the past and how did you overcome them?

5.What issomething positive you've learned about yourself since starting recovery?

6.If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?

7.What are some healthy coping mechanisms you use to deal with stress or difficult situations?

8.What are some things you're looking forward to in your life right now?

9.What are some things you've learned about addiction and recovery that have helped you?

10.What is something you're proud of achieving since starting recovery?

Aim of the activity–the participants get to know everyone in the group, they also get used to thinking out loud and getting comfortable with each other. This activity prepares them for the rest of the project.

In the end of the activity we have are flection–the participants get asked did they struggle to share this information with the others, how did they feel after they answered the questions, did they hear similar answers, they propose suggestions about other questions.

Participants draw their emotions and make collages with the drawings

Topic: drugs and alcohol abuse

Instruction: Each of you gets a role that you choose (little paper).Even if you sit on a chair in a circle, you are not in a role. If you want to enter a role and talk from its position, you must enter the circle and play the role.

SAFE RULE: If at any time during the game you feel that the role is difficult for you, getout ofthe circle and sit on the chair. This shows that you are not a part of the game.Lets start to discuss each other

Roles:

Government

Company

Company customer

Church

Youth Worker

School system

Parent

Kid

Media

Ghost-its role is to present adifferent perspective in each role(it can be everywhere at anytime)

Notes for facilitator: important to pay attention to the level of the game: first level-people might get traumatized because they had an experience with this role in real life and the can have strong emotional reaction and the facilitator has to to it down. Second level–group level-some of the roles can be infamous and those people can get attacked and the facilitator has to chane the structure and support the those role and ease the attention. Third level–hotspots–situation when the conversation is developing the facilitator has to pay attention to the details and bring them up and ask the other roles about it

Debriefing:disscusion about the feellings of the participants during the game

Aim: to change the attitude and understand the other viewpoints, its not important to find a solution to the problem, the important think is to feel another emotion

Note:the participants may modify the roles and ad characters according to theirexperiences in life

Activity three

Instruction:

Choose 1 person from the group of participants (ideally chosen from volunteers) who wants to work individually in front of the group. Subsequently, this person will be guided by a trainer and other group participants can ask additional questions.

The chosen person will work on the 2 lines (paths) of his life that he sees in front of him. During the creation of paths, we use objects (symbols) or posts to mark the path and progress. A person is going through a journey and the coach/people ask him what he will go through in the future.

At any time, the participant can develop any of the paths that attract him more and make more sense for him. He can completely leave one of the paths. It is important to work as a role model and at the same time monitor the reaction.

After finishing the sample activity, the participants then work in pairs or threes and create a self reflection.
